Top 5 Factors That Lead to Project Success

I found this article interesting, it talks about 5 factors for success being:

  • Intelligent People
  • Comprehensive Planning
  • Open Communication
  • Proper Risk Management
  • Strong Project Closure

While some of the items are seen as being obvious others are something that you think about more subconsciously. When I wanted to look more into the subject I have seen that the factors for success are ever changing and what might be seen as a success to one company is not the same for another.

Teamgantt had a list of 7 factors that they considered to be inportant:

https://www.teamgantt.com/blog/what-makes-a-successful-project-7-ways-to-ensure-a-projects-success-before-you-even-begin

  • A validated idea
  • Solid goals that bring value to the business
  • Clear objectives and requirements
  • Flexible action steps that respond to risk
  • Every person in your team is in it for the long run
  • Your stakeholders utmost support

A business or persons values for success can be different but the same in some aspects but they are all important, they just hold different levels of importance.

Good summary. The use of those articles is interesting. I like that strong project closure is on there, as some may think it is not too important, while it is. I also like that success can be different for everyone, as well as what is important and how important certain aspects are. With some factors potentially being subconscious, it shows that it is not just up to one person to figure out what is needed.

I like your summary, Savannah. It highlights some key points in project success such as good planning, communication, and risk management. I agree what works for one company does not work for another. Each project is different and requires a unique process. That is why each party involved needs to show dedication and commitment to helping that process along. Clear goals and objectives are important to establish early on to keep the project development moving along within time constraints. I like that you mentioned flexibility as well. Being adaptable to change is important. Change should also be something that is expected. Nothing ever really goes as planned.

Good idea posting sources that go into more detail about project success factors. Some of them definitely seem obvious, but sometimes these factors might be too obvious that people forget to take them into consideration and move their focus towards the other factors. Everyone has their own definition of success, so it’s important for project managers to be able to identify what their team or company values and their goals so that projects can be completed so that those goals are achieved and values are maintained.

“The factors of success are ever changing”
This is some thing I had never taken the time to think about! I wonder how the rapid pace of the evolution of technology has changed the factors of success. I can imagine that “impressions” play a large role in discovering how many people really do check out you product or ad. I do think its kinda awesome that team gantt is helping their userbase by providing some information on what makes a successful project. They seem to be the kings of project organization.

Interesting articles, there are a different explanations of what “success” is, but they all have some overlap. It’s important for the project manager to determine what is most important to focus on depending on the situation.

I think you did a very concise and thorough job in summarizing this chapter Savannah. I especially agree with how you mentioned how what people value for success can all be different but equally important. This really ties in well to what we talked about a few weeks ago in accomodating your team members and allowing them to work in the way that is best for them, as we all have different strengths and weaknesses, that can both greatly harm and hurt the team. By adapting to our team members’ personalities and their preferred methods of accomplishing tasks, we as project managers are able to maximize the team members strengths, allowing the team to succeed as much as possible.
